GPLRC Hosts Magical Harry Potter-Themed Literacy Study Trip at Warner Bros. Studio

News and Events 394

In an inspiring blend of fantasy and phonics, the Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre (GPLRC)—funded and operated by the Smart Rudder Group—successfully organized a Harry Potter-themed literacy study trip at the iconic Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter this summer. The event brought together young readers from local and international partner schools for a one-of-a-kind immersive literacy experience.

Where Literacy Meets Magic

Held in July 2024, the study trip was part of GPLRC’s ongoing mission to make reading engaging, imaginative, and meaningful for students across age groups. Set against the spellbinding backdrop of the world-famous Harry Potter film sets, the trip offered a unique opportunity for students to explore narrative structure, character development, and language play within a beloved literary universe.

Activities included:

  • Guided literary tours of iconic sets like the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, and Platform 9¾
  • Themed writing workshops on creative storytelling and descriptive language
  • Phonics scavenger hunts based on magical vocabulary and spells
  • Discussion sessions on themes such as friendship, courage, and identity in the Harry Potter series

Enhancing Literacy Through Pop Culture

“This programme was designed to show children that reading is not just a classroom task—it’s an adventure,” said Dr. Weiwei Zhang, Curriculum Director of Smart Rudder and academic lead for the programme. “By connecting phonics and literacy learning to the world of Harry Potter, we’re able to ignite students’ curiosity and deepen their engagement with language.”

The event also aligned with the Centre’s broader pedagogical goals under its Literacy and AI Division, which seeks to integrate popular culture, multimedia content, and adaptive technology into the literacy journey.

International Participation and Cultural Exchange

Students from schools in the UK, China, and other partner countries joined the event, making the study trip not only a celebration of reading but also a platform for cross-cultural exchange. Through group discussions and collaborative activities, participants explored different interpretations of the text and shared their perspectives in English—building both literacy and communication skills.

A Model for Future Enrichment Programmes

Following the success of this summer’s event, the Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre is planning to expand its literacy-themed study trip model to other literary landmarks and cultural destinations, combining academic depth with joyful, experiential learning.
