About Our Centre
The Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre (GPLRC) is an international academic and training hub dedicated to advancing the science, practice, and global accessibility of phonics and literacy education. The Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of linguists, cognitive scientists, education experts, and experienced practitioners to drive innovation in early reading instruction, teacher development, and curriculum design.



Jimmy Liu is an accomplished educator, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the Global Phonics & Literacy Research Centre. Holding an MSc from the University of London and a PhD from Peking University, he is also the founder of Dr Phonics and CEO of Ad Astra Education Sci-Tech Group. His career spans academia, business, and technology, having served as a professor at Fudan University and worked with leading institutions such as Microsoft, China Everbright Bank, and China Everbright Group. A first prize winner of the China Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition in 2005 and a visiting scholar at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School, Jimmy Liu brings a unique combination of academic expertise, corporate experience, and innovative vision to the field of global literacy and education.

A prolific researcher, Dr. Browne has published widely in leading academic journals.

Participants will learn to adapt textbook content for diverse student needs while ensuring fidelity to official standards. Upon completion, teachers receive Official Textbook Trainer Certification, demonstrating expertise in implementing globally recognized teaching materials in dynamic and learner-centred ways.
The Official Certified Phonics Trainer Programme is an intensive, research-based training designed to equip educators with advanced expertise in systematic phonics instruction. This programme includes official Jolly Phonics training courses and workshops, covering phonological awareness, blending and segmenting strategies, and multisensory teaching techniques for early literacy. Participants will gain practical classroom strategies aligned with global phonics standards and learn how to deliver engaging lessons that build strong foundational reading skills. Graduates receive an Official Phonics Trainer Certification, qualifying them to teach and train others in evidence-based phonics approaches, including the Jolly Phonics methodology.

The Science of Reading Certified Teacher Training Programme offers educators comprehensive, research-based training rooted in cognitive science and evidence-driven literacy practices. Participants will either train on-site at one of the UK’s top teacher training institutions through officially recognized courses or complete the programme online for flexible access. The curriculum covers phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies aligned with the Science of Reading framework. Additionally, teachers have the unique opportunity to gain practical classroom experience and mentorship at a highly respected UK school, ensuring they can confidently implement structured literacy approaches in real-world settings. Upon completion, participants earn a Science of Reading Certified Teacher Credential, recognized internationally.

The CPD-Certified Teacher Training Programmes provide educators with access to a wide range of UK-recognized and internationally respected CPD-accredited courses, ensuring ongoing professional development aligned with global teaching standards. These programmes cover essential areas such as phonics instruction, literacy development, inclusive teaching strategies, and the integration of educational technology, including AI tools for personalized learning. Designed for flexibility, the training can be completed through online modules, blended formats, or in-person workshops, enabling teachers to continuously update their skills while earning official Continuing Professional Development credits. Completion enhances professional credibility and career progression opportunities within schools and educational organizations worldwide.
