GPLRC Donates 300 Children’s Books to Local Oxfam Shop to Support After-School Reading in the Community

News and Events 383

The Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre (GPLRC), an international literacy research and teacher training institution operated by the Smart Rudder Group, has donated over 300 brand-new children’s books to the Oxfam Charity Shop in Oxford. This community initiative aims to make quality reading materials more accessible for local families and encourage after-school reading habits among school-aged children.

Bringing Books Into Local Homes and Hands

The book donation is part of GPLRC’s wider commitment to promoting literacy through community engagement. The carefully selected books—ranging from phonics-based beginner readers to chapter books for upper primary students—are now available through Oxfam’s community retail channels at affordable prices, or offered for free to families in need.

“Our goal is to ensure that every child in the community has access to books that are both enjoyable and developmentally appropriate,” said Dr. Joshua, Director at Smart Rudder and academic lead at GPLRC. “Literacy begins with access, and this partnership with Oxfam allows us to reach families in a meaningful, sustainable way.”

Encouraging After-School Reading for Lifelong Impact

The book donation supports GPLRC’s advocacy for structured, enjoyable after-school reading time, especially for children from underserved backgrounds. Alongside the donation, the Centre has released a free After-School Reading Guide for parents and caregivers, offering tips on how to establish engaging daily reading routines at home.

Local schools in Oxford have also been encouraged to direct families to the Oxfam shop to explore the donated collection, which includes:

  • Decodable readers for early phonics practice
  • Picture books that support language development
  • Diverse and inclusive stories that reflect global cultures
  • Classic children’s literature to spark imagination and curiosity

Strengthening Community Partnerships

The initiative marks a growing collaboration between GPLRC and local organizations such as Oxfam, schools, and libraries in Oxfordshire. By connecting educational research with grassroots outreach, the Centre aims to make literacy progress a shared, community-driven goal.

“We’re delighted to partner with GPLRC on this meaningful project,” said a representative from Oxfam Oxford. “These books will be a gift to many families in the area, and we’re proud to be part of an effort that champions both education and equity.”
