Preparing for all DELTA modules

Prepare with Confidence, Succeed Globally

You can prepare for DELTA by:

1, taking a distance learning programme with an approved provider.

2, taking a face-to-face, online, blended or distance course with an authorised centre

In addition, you can also prepare independently by:

  • reading and studying independently using reference books
  • observing other teachers to experience new techniques, materials and resources
  • asking your colleagues to observe you when you are teaching lessons, giving you constructive feedback
  • thinking about your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. You can use the Cambridge English Teaching Framework to help you determine your strengths and weaknesses.

Module One sample tests
These sample tests show you what a full test paper will look like and the types of questions that will appear. The examination report describes how candidates performed in these tests and offers you guidance on how to prepare for your examination.
Standard size DELTA module 1 exam papers
By default, DELTA module 1 exam papers are written with a font size of Arial point 11 for all rubrics. However, in every session there will be material reproduced from other sources. The print on these materials is likely to be smaller than point 11 and in different font styles. If you think this might be challenging for you to work with, please speak to your centre as soon as possible to discuss using the A3 unmodified version.
A3 size DELTA module 1 exam papers
DELTA Module 1 exam papers are available as A3 unmodified versions. This means that the question paper is enlarged to A3 size. This is not modified large print and the material you see in the question paper which is reproduced from other sources (e.g. published course books, learner work in original handwriting, articles from newspapers or online sources etc.) may not be fully accessible to you if you have a severe vision impairment. Please speak to your centre and they will contact us for further advice and help.

The DELTA test in detail

CELTA courses are delivered by authorised centres on behalf of Cambridge English. All CELTA courses include at least 120 hours of contact between candidates and course tutors, and include:

  • tutorial support and consultation
  • supervised lesson planning
  • 6 hours’ assessed teaching practice per candidate supervised by a course tutor
  • feedback on teaching practice
  • peer observation of teaching practice (i.e. watching the other candidates’ lessons)
  • 6 hours’ directed observation of lessons taught by experienced ELT professionals, up to 3 hours of which may be of filmed lessons

You should also allow for 80 additional learning hours for pre-course preparation, reading, research, assignment writing, lesson preparation and record keeping.

The maximum ratio of candidates to tutors is one tutor for every six candidates, and there are at least two tutors on each course.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed throughout the course and there is no final examination. The two types of assessment are:

Teaching practice

You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with adult classes at a minimum of two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance.

Written assignments

You will complete four written assignments (each 750–1,000 words). These focus on:

  • analysing and responding to adult learner needs
  • analysing language for teaching purposes
  • teaching language skills
  • reflecting on classroom teaching

Your teaching practice and written assignments are assessed by your trainers during the course. Your trainers will discuss your progress with you, including in at least two one-to-one tutorials, so you should have a good idea of your strengths and areas to focus on.

Results

You receive a separate certificate for each module you complete. You receive the full DELTA qualification when you complete all three modules.

The grades awarded are:

  • Pass with Distinction
  • Pass with Merit
  • Pass
  • Fail.

We release results for all three modules approximately two months after the DELTA Module One test dates in June and December. Certificates are sent to centres one week after results release. Where candidates enter for DELTA Module Two only in October, results are released approximately one month after the submission deadline.

If you complete all three DELTA modules, you can ask your centre to request your full DELTA certificate from Cambridge English.

You can take the modules in any order and at any time. There is no time limit to complete all three modules.
