School Literacy Club in Salisbury

News and Events 363

The Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre (GPLRC), operated under the Smart Rudder Group, is proud to announce the official launch of its After-School Literacy Club for local children in Salisbury. This exciting initiative is part of the Centre’s wider mission to bring research-informed, inclusive, and engaging literacy education directly into communities.

Supporting Local Learners Beyond the Classroom

Designed for primary-aged pupils from local Salisbury schools, the After-School Club aims to enhance early reading, phonics, and literacy skills through fun, interactive, and evidence-based activities. Sessions are led by trained literacy specialists and supported by researchers from the Centre, ensuring each child receives individualized support in a warm, encouraging environment.

The programme includes:

  • Interactive phonics games and storytelling
  • Speech and reading fluency practice using AI-powered tools
  • Guided reading with leveled, decodable books
  • Multisensory literacy stations (arts, music, movement)
  • Access to take-home phonics and reading kits

Bridging Research and Community Impact

The After-School Club is also part of a broader research initiative under the Centre’s Phonics Learning and Cultural Differences Division, aiming to explore how supplemental literacy support can reduce learning gaps, especially for multilingual learners and those in need of additional support.

“This club represents our commitment to making our research matter,” said Dr. Weiwei Zhang, Curriculum Director of Smart Rudder and Dean of Yanghui Academy. “By partnering directly with Salisbury’s local schools, we’re ensuring that the latest findings in phonics and literacy development are not just published—but practiced.”

Free for Participating Schools in 2025 Pilot Phase

In its initial pilot phase, the programme is being offered free of charge to selected local schools, thanks to funding from the Smart Rudder Group. The pilot will run during the 2025 academic year and will include ongoing progress tracking, parental engagement events, and an end-of-term literacy showcase.

The Centre is also exploring opportunities to expand the club to other towns and cities across the UK based on the outcomes of the Salisbury model.

A Hub for Literacy Innovation

As a global centre for literacy excellence, the GPLRC brings together researchers, educators, and technologists to develop cutting-edge approaches to early reading. With the After-School Club, the Centre takes an important step toward bringing academic innovation into everyday life—benefiting local learners and strengthening school partnerships.
