GPLRC Hosts Community Reading Event at City Library, Inspires Local Families and Young Readers

News and Events 287

The Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre (GPLRC), operated by the Smart Rudder Group, recently hosted a vibrant and heartwarming Library Reading Event at the Salisbury City Library, drawing enthusiastic participation from local families, educators, and young readers. The event was part of the Centre’s commitment to promoting a love of reading and community literacy through meaningful, research-informed engagement.

Bringing Literacy to Life in the Heart of the City

Held on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the event featured interactive read-aloud sessions, storytelling performances, phonics games, and literacy-themed arts and crafts activities. Dozens of children from local schools attended with their parents and carers, turning the library into a joyful hub of reading, learning, and imagination.

Volunteers and literacy specialists from GPLRC led themed sessions around classic and contemporary children’s books, including phonics-based interactive readings designed to support early readers in building decoding skills, vocabulary, and reading confidence.

Positive Response from the Community

The event received an overwhelmingly positive response from the Salisbury community. Local councillors, librarians, and school staff praised the initiative for its inclusive designprofessional facilitation, and impact on early literacy development.

“It’s wonderful to see children not only enjoying books but actively engaging with the building blocks of reading through play,” said one local headteacher. “The Global Phonics and Literacy Research Centre has brought something truly special to our city.”

Parents expressed appreciation for the Centre’s accessible approach to phonics and the practical strategies they could take home to support their children’s reading journey.

A Model of Research-Driven Community Outreach

This event aligns closely with the Centre’s research direction on Phonics Learning and Cultural Differences, which focuses on bringing high-impact literacy support into local contexts through culturally responsive methods. It also reflects GPLRC’s broader belief that libraries can serve as powerful community partners in literacy advancement.

“Our goal is to make literacy engaging, relevant, and accessible for all children,” said Dr. Weiwei Zhang, Curriculum Director of Smart Rudder. “This event shows how research, community, and creativity can come together to support young readers.”

More Events Ahead

Following the success of the Salisbury event, the GPLRC plans to expand its Library Literacy Series to other cities across the UK and internationally. Future events will include bilingual storytelling, family literacy workshops, and phonics-based book donation drives in collaboration with local councils and education partners.s.
